Roman Emperor. He was born in AD 126 and began his career as a teacher before joining the army in approximately AD 160. He was given command of a legion in the early 170's, and made a suffect consul in AD 175, before the Emperor Commodus chose him as urban of Rome in AD 189. On Commodus's assassination in AD 192 he was put forward as Emperor by the conspirators and soon elected by the senate. He quickly introduced reforms to curb the power of the Praetorian Guard and stop corruption among the imperial freedmen, and in doing so made enemies of both these powerful groups. Angered by his refusal to pay a heavy bribe for their support, the Praetorian Guard mutinied and stormed the Imperial palace. Rather than flee to safety he confronted the attackers and was stabbed to death by the soldiers. His head was paraded through the streets before he was finally buried in the tomb of his in laws. He was deified in the reign of Septimus Severus.
