Roman Emperor. He was born in 126 AD and began his career as a teacher before joining the army in approximately 160 AD. He was given command of a legion in the early 170's, and made a suffect consul in 175 AD, before the Emperor Commodus chose him as urban of Rome in 189 AD. On Commodus's assassination in 192 AD he was put forward as Emperor by the conspirators and soon elected by the senate. He quickly introduced reforms to curb the power of the Praetorian Guard and stop corruption among the imperial freedmen, and in doing so made enemies of both these powerful groups. Angered by his refusal to pay a heavy bribe for their support, the Praetorian Guard mutinied and stormed the Imperial palace. Rather than flee to safety he confronted the attackers and was stabbed to death by the soldiers. His head was paraded through the streets before he was finally buried in the tomb of his in laws. He was deified in the reign of Septimus Severus.
