Chester C. "Chet" Hammer, 88, of Idaho Falls, died March 20, 2009, at Idaho Falls Health and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born June 5, 1920, in Woodville, Idaho, to John Austin Hammer and Florence Eliza Hope Hammer. The family moved to Rexburg, and when Chester was 9 years old, the family moved to Salt Lake City. He had a joyful life riding the Bamburger Trolley, going to Lagoon and Salt Air and attending school. In 1941, he joined the Army and served overseas for four years.

He was very ambitious and always had a job. He was a baker, newspaper boy, delivery boy and worked at Galiger Steel, Gate City Steel, C. R. England trucking from coast to coast and Marvin's Fast Delivery. He loved driving trucks. He kept retiring but wanted to be busy so he would get another job and keep working.

He married Thelka Flake, and they were later divorced. He married Gloria Moore. They were later divorced. He married Patricia LaMon Packer on Nov. 21, 1971. She passed away April 27, 2000. He married Wilda Haskett Johnson on Aug. 7, 2000.

He played the bass guitar with his boys, and they set up a neighborhood orchestra in their yard. The music could be heard around the neighborhood and it kept the boys busy. He loved water-skiing, fishing, boating, hunting, nature, traveling and gardening. Chet and Wilda were volunteers with the American Red Cross and worked on both local and national disasters. When serving in Missouri after a tornado, President Bush came to assess the damage. Chet and Wilda were honored to have had their picture taken with the President.

He is survived by his daughters, Myrna (Warren) Jensen and Marvella (J. R. ) Bath, both of Mesa, Ariz.; son, John (Diane) Hammer of Hurricane, Utah; stepdaughters, Lynda (Terry) Scott of Nampa, Stephanie (Larry) Taylor and JoAnne Holt, both of Colt, Ark., Audra (Mark) Smith of St. George, Utah, and Marcia Roberts and Julia (Danny) Evans, both of Idaho Falls; step-sons, Edward (Kathy) Sutton of Salt Lake City, Raymond (Evelyn) Short of Parkin, Ark., Wallace Haskett of Pocatello and Dennis (Vera) Haskett of Shelley; 37 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dolly (Ray) Goodrich of Riverton, Utah. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a daughter, Loris Bath; a son, Roger Wayne Hammer; a stepson, Richard Henderson; a grandchild, Daylon Crandell; and seven siblings.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Idaho Falls LDS 24th Ward Chapel, 1155 First St., with Bishop Doug Hillman officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, March 26, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. in Idaho Falls, and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday, prior to the services at the church.
