Richard "Dick" Wayne Robbins
May 18, 1926 - March 20, 2009

Richard Wayne Robbins (82) of Grand Junction, Colorado died at home on Friday evening, March 20, 2009. His family was at his side. The oldest of seven children, Richard was born on May 18, 1926 to Charles F. II and Ruth (Eberhardt) Robbins in Ottowa County, Kansas. He was called into military service at the height of World War II, just after completing his junior year in high school. After serving in the U.S. Army, he was honorably discharged and returned home to finish his senior year and graduate. He attended Brown Mackie College in Salina, Kansas and majored in business. After exploring a variety of jobs, Richard eventually chose a career as a bus driver. He drove for Trailways and Greyhound and retired after more than 35 years of service. He was proud of receiving the "Million Miles of Safe Driving" award twice. Richard was a magnificent man who was loved by so many. He was an avid and creative storyteller and loved holding court with all who would listen to his tales. His family will remember him every time they see a 'blue streak' in the sky-knowing he is up there talking with his buddies! He enjoyed the outdoors-- farming, fishing, tinkering, and raising a variety of animals from pugs to llamas to exotic birds. Richard was an enemy to no one and a lover of life. He respected everyone and everything. "Hold That Tiger!" He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Donna Weir Robbins; brother, Charles F. III (Gloria) Robbins; sisters, Jean (Jack) Bradley, Beverly (John) Benevedes, Carol (Hank) Landon, and Carla Remmy; and his seven children, Kay Weir (Thomas); James (Debra) Robbins; Cheryl Hollins; Connie (Dennis) Robbins-Brady; Kathy (Gary) Schlauger; Larry (Lori) Robbins all of Grand Junction; and Linda (Kenny) Wilhelm of Dodge City, Kansas. He has 21 grandchildren and six great grandchildren who will miss him greatly. Services will be held Friday, March 27, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Burial will be in Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, PO Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
