Margaret E. Gardner, 89, died at 3:38 a.m. March 21, 2009, at Hospice House surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Fairfield to Hiram Sylvester "Vester" and E. Josephine Klingaman Stark. She married Charles M. Gardner Sept. 28, 1941, in Fairfield. He preceded her in death Sept. 25, 1990.

A graduate of Fairfield High School in 1937 and Iowa Success School, she worked in the bookkeeping department at John Morrell and Co. She and her husband, Charles, farmed their family farm west of Chillicothe for many years. Creating her own tour business, she escorted tours all over the U.S., Canada and many foreign countries for 20 years.She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Golden Jubilee Circle of King's Daughters, High Noon Kiwanis, Women's Club, Red Hat Society and the Wapello County Historical Society. She had served as a 4-H leader and on the Conservation Board. She was also involved in many community service projects through the years.

Surviving are a daughter, Eileen (Rodney) Day of Ottumwa; two sons, Stephen (Barbara) Gardner and Maurice (Melissa) Gardner both of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Don) Edwards of Kansas City, Kan., Janeen (Steve) Winnike of Long Grove, Ill., Laura (Tor) Nicklaus of Iowa City, Michael (Natalie) Gardner of Wilmington, N.C., Jared (Heather) Gardner, Gavin (Alecia) Gardner both of Ottumwa and Dianne (Ricky) Ennis of Ames; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Alita Stark of Washington and a special friend, Frank Rivey of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Stark and a sister, Bess, who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Young and Rev. Charles Luers officiating.
