Johanna Berger Kemper married Lippe-Detmold-born farmer and nurseryman Heinrich Christoph Kemper in 1855. He brought her to a one-room walnut-log cabin. Eventually, into a seven-room frame house, where they raised nine children, of whom Edward Kemper, viticulturalist, nurseryman, and photographer, is the best known.
