Malissa Catharine Buchanan was named for her grandmothers: Malissa (md) Buchanan, and Catharine (md) Long and went by Catharine, almost from the start, (see 1850 census mention below), and to the end, as 2 of her children's DC cite 'mother's name' Kathryn and Catherine" Buchanan.
DOD DISCREPANCY: While her headstone and death cert both say she was b 1853, she was in fact b 1850. (1850 Census Dist 6 Franklin Co, AL 13Dec1850, "Catharine, 9/12 (mos)." (Technically, 12-9=3, so March or Feb could actually be her factual DOB, but her g-granddaughter, Diane and I have discussed this, and she celebrated Jan as her birth month, so we'll give her that. But 1850 is the actual year of birth, not 1853, so for accuracy we are posting her actual year of birth as 1850).
Bettie, as named here, was Zana Elizabeth Long, and Zana's husband, James Buchanan. Zana was the daughter of John R + Catharine Long and later in life appears to have been known as "Bettie and Betsy" as evidenced on several of her descendants death certs, given by family informants.
