South Carolina Governor. He attended what is now Princeton University and graduated college before he turned seventeen. He studied law in the office of Edward Rutledge (Signer of the Declaration of Independence) and was admitted to the bar by 1799. He was from an extremely wealthy family, and was wealthy in his own right from the inheritance of his grandfather who left him the "Oaks" plantation in Georgetown County. At the encouragement of his father he made his appearances in Northern social circles, and in New York met his future wife Theodosia Burr, daughter of Aaron Burr. Burr recognized the promise in Alston as well as entertained the possibility of how Alston's wealth and influence could help him in his quest for the Presidency. He married Theodosia in 1801 in Albany, New York. He would enter politics in South Carolina in 1802 when he was elected to the Legislature. He would serve in the Legislature until December 10, 1812 when he was elected Governor. On December 31, 1812 Theodosia left to visit her father whom she had not seen in four years. She traveled without her husband who was unable to leave the State. On her voyage to New York, aboard the schooner "Patriot", the ship was lost and presumed sunk. Alston would serve out his Governorship, then return to his business interests in Charleston and Georgetown.
