He died on May 5, 1787 in Martinsville, Henry County, Virginia. Henry Mayes was married to Phoebe (Pheby, Phebey). The marriage produced Abraham, Sherwood (Sherrod), Littlebury, Henry, Gooding (Goodin), Liggen (Liggin), Susannah, Elizabeth, Frances (Fanny), and Phoebe (Pheby). Henry Mayes, with his three sons took the oath to support the American Revolution, August 30, 1777. He was of the fifth generation of the family in America. (Note: At least one record reflects Henry's birth year as 1725, and death date as March 3, 1787.)
Spouse: Phebe
Marr: 23 May 1754
Children: Abraham (~1749),Sherwood (1746-1836), Susannah (~1753-),Elizabeth (~1755-),Frances (~1759-),Littleberry (~1761-),Henry (~1763-),Goodin (~1764-)
,Liggen (~1767-),Phoebe (~1769-),David (~1770-)

By Ron Mayes:
Many believe that the Mayes family evolves from the Reverend William Mease, who was born in England in 1574, migrated to Virginia in 1610, and died there in 1650. He may, in fact, have died in London, England in 1636. William Mease was a prominent citizen of England and America. Much is known and written about him, and descendents of the Mayes family all over America claim lineage to him. He had a son John (Maies/Maise) who was born in Virginia in 1615. John was the father of Henry Mayes born in 1645, in Virginia. Henry's children were Thomas, William and Mattox. Some evidence "suggests" that either Thomas or William were the father of Henry Mayes (Maise) born in Virginia in about 1725, who is presently the first "confirmed" ancestor of our family. Several current researched disagree, however.
