While visiting at the home of his niece, Mrs. James Star in Lyle, Klickitat County, Washington he entered a pen where a sow was housed. She attacked him, mauling and biting him. He was able to get out of the pen, but died of his wounds at the hospital in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon.
