Charles P Haven/Havens served in the Civil War. At 24 with a wife and two young children, he enlisted on 8/14/1862 at Hancock, NY. He joined 144th NY Infantry Regiment, Company F on 9/27/1862 as a private. He was wounded on 11/30/1864 at Honey Hill, SC. According to the 1890 veteran's census, he was "gunshot through head." The next day, 12/1/1864, he was promoted to corporal. After returning home, he used his enlistment money and soldier's pay to purchase $500 worth of land in what is now Spring Brook Township, Lackawanna County, PA. He fathered seven more children after his injury. For the rest of his life, he received payments as an "invalid" and his second wife, Sophia, received payments as his widow.
