Nicolas Esch was born in Sandweiler, Luxembourg. He came to America via LeHarre, Seine-Inferior, France to New York on the ship LaGascogne at the age of 22. Nicholas and Mary Ann Demuth were married in Butler County, June 7, 1898. They were living in Boone County, Shell Creek Precinct in 1900, Nicolas's brother Theodore was listed in the home. In 1910, they were living in Granville, Platte County, Nebraska and Nicolas listed his occupation as a shoe maker. In 1920, the family lived in Broken Bow and Nicolas worked on the railroad. Nicolas had a stroke in 1922 and died of apoplexy and chronic nephritis on August 14, 1926. His service was held at the St. Thomas Catholic church in Mason City with burial at Black Hill Creek Cemetery.
Mary Ann was living on a farm southwest of Mason City in 1930. The children in the home were William, Theodore, Mary, and Leo.
