Because of the plethora of names and spellings for Laodicea, I will use the name Lucinda from her obituary. Comments on her obituary: Lucinda's husband died in October 1904, more than one year before Lucinda died. The obituary states that James Stice was her half brother, but the sources available to me record that James Fontaine Stice of Scandia, Kansas was her brother. Lucinda, along with James was the daughter of Shelby Stice and Betty Jane Phelps. Most records state that Laodicea was born on October 1833. The obituary does not mention her daughter Frances Jane Kennedy by name. It mentions "Mrs. Nondorf," Eliza Nondorf, who lived in Scandia. Eliza took care of her mother in her old age up until Lucinda moved to the home of J. F. Kennedy. All this leads me to think that this obituary was written by a friend who lived in Scandia, especially because of the reference to "our townsman James Stice."
Lucinda's first marriage was to William D. Sullivan on August 21, 1849 in Monroe county, Iowa. William and Lucinda had one child, my Great Great Grandmother, Frances Jane, the first wife of James F. Kennedy. Luncinda's second marriage was to Martin Jackson "Mastin" Collet on July 15, 1852 in Adair county, Missouri.
Available records have spelled her name in various ways: Loadicea, Leo Dica, Leodisse, Loodicea, Dicea, Laodisa, Leodica, Loadica , Saodis and finally Lucinda. Other names in the record were just the initials: Mrs. M.D. Collet, Mrs. L.D. Collett and Mrs. D.A. Collett. I do not know why this headstone has the initials D. A. Collett.
I am certain this is the obituary of my GGGGrandmother because of the reference to James F. Kennedy, Mrs. Nondorf and James Stice. I am also certain that this is her burial place because her daughter Frances Jane is buried near her in the cemetery according to the record from USGenWeb. A child, Raymond A. Kennedy, is also buried nearby but I do not know what his relationship is yet.
