Lyle Skeen Levi was the son of Isaac and Rachel Levi. His grandfather Isaac Levi was reported to have been the first Jew in Indiana. He said on the 1850 census that he had been born in Hungary in 1749 and came to America in May 1758. Isaac was a Revolutionary War Veteran. His memorial page can be found on findagrave (19970944 and 51201361).

Lyle Levi enlisted in the Union Army on 15 August 1862. He served in Company F, 83rd Infantry Regiment for Indiana and then was transferred to the 48th Infantry Regiment on 30 May 1865. After the Civil War ended, he returned home to Ripley County, Indiana where he took up a life of crime. He became a counterfeiter and spent time in prison at the Indiana State Prison. He was serving time and was counted as a prisoner on the 1870 and 1880 census. On 15 September, 1897 he was hanged in Ripley County with several other prisoners. He was about 65 years old at the time of his death. An article about the hanging can be found in the New York Times dated 16 September 1897.
