OBITUARIES - CHESTER H. MCVEEN - Republic Steel security guard
Chester H. McVeen, 74, of Elyria died Friday in Massillon after a long illness.
He was born in Syracuse, N.Y.
Mr. McVeen was a security guard for Republic Steel.
During World War II, he served in the Marines in the South Pacific and was in the battles of Guadalcanal and Palaloo. Mr. McVeen received a Purple Heart.
He attended St. Paul United Church of Christ in Elyria and belonged to American Legion Post 12 and VFW Post 1079, both in Elyria.
He enjoyed collecting coins, knives and commemorative items.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth (nee Law); sons Michael of Massillon, Timothy of Vista, Calif., Howard "Skip" of Euclid, Richard of Syracuse, and Dennis of Florida; daughters Susan Loudin of Grafton, and Elizabeth McVeen of Elyria; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanee August of Alameda, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary L. (nee Corbin).
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Curtis-Scheuffler-Busch Family Chapel, 114 Second St., Elyria, where members of American Legion Post 12 will conduct a service at 7 p.m.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
The Rev. Kevan Franklin will officiate.
Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria, where member of VFW Post 1079 will conduct military honors.
NOTE: Chet and Mary also had a son Bruce Mc Veen.
