Trooper, The Royal Canadian Dragoons based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 20, he was from Hearst, ON. He was deployed as a member of the Reconnaissance Squadron, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Tpr Corey Hayes were killed, and three soldiers were wounded, when their armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a patrol in the Shah Wali Kot District approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Kandahar City. The incident happened about two hours after two soldiers died and five were injured by a roadside bomb in Zhari district.

Tpr Bouthillier, known as Boots, was a keen sportsman and martial arts specialist renowned for his sense of humour. He joined the army in 2006 a month before he turned 18. His family never saw his death coming and truly believed he would return home safely from his mission.

The deaths bring to 116 the number of Canadian military fatalities in the Afghanistan conflict since 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
