Phyllis Kate Charlton
02 Nov 1940 - 26 Feb 2009

P. Kate Charlton was born on Nov. 2, 1940, to David and Frances Charlton. The fourth and last child of the family, she was rambunctious, daring, and known for her beautiful blond curls. Phyllis attended Ainsworth Elementary School, Lincoln High School, as well as time at Oregon State University. After attending college, she spent some time as a window dresser at Rhodes Department Store in downtown Portland. She also traveled to Europe in the early 1960s. On Aug. 11, 1962, she was involved in a single car accident on Highway 26, en route to the family beach house. While the accident left her paralyzed from the waist down, it didn't seem to reduce her abundant energy and sense of fun. The need for a wheelchair did not slow her down in the least. On April 4, 1964, she married John Francis McKenna of San Mateo, Calif. They then moved to the Los Angeles area where they lived for several years. In 1968 they returned to Portland, anchoring themselves among family in the southwest hills. Phyllis was a member of the Junior League, leading the publication of the "No Regrets Cookbook" in 1974. She loved to cook, entertain and travel. She and John made numerous trips to the Southern California, Hawaii and Europe sailing on the QEII where they met the Duchess of Windsor. There is even a photo of them greeting Pope Paul during a visit to Rome. They had a wonderful 17 years together before deciding to part ways. At that point, Phyllis changed her name to P. Kate Charlton, abbreviating her first name (which she never really liked) giving herself a long sought after middle name. Family, friends, nurses, service people-they all were regulars in her home. Her 50th birthday party was a great example of her expansive community. There were abundant guests, all of whom were engaged with P. Kate in different segments of her life. The guy who did her hair, the man who trimmed the ivy, the nurse who came on Wednesdays, the mail carrier who was a warlock, friends from grade school, from high school, neighbors, and many family members. P. Kate had a wonderful life, surrounded by those who loved her very, very much. We are extremely sad at her passing and that her body could no longer contain her adventuresome spirit. She floated up, over the rainbow, on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009. P. Kate was predeceased by her parents; sister-in-law, Janet Charlton; and former husband, John McKenna. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Joe Labadie; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Joan Charlton; brother, John Charlton; ten nieces and nephews (with a special shout-out to Peter Labadie whose presence and involvement we know extended her life); and numerous great-nieces and-nephews. The family would like to thank Sally Johnson and Gerry O'Scannlain; caregivers, Tabitha Orth, Roxanna Seay, Alecia Thomas and Julia Mortlock; and the staff at the Good Sam ICU for their care and compassion for P. Kate during the past week. There will be a private burial attended by family, followed by a celebration of her life open to family and friends at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009, at The Racquet Club; 1853 S.W. Highland Rd. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a contribution to the Good Samaritan Foundation, P.O. Box 4484, Portland, OR 97208. Or take a bunch of friends out for hamburgers at the Skyline Drive-In, one of P. Kate's favorite destinations.
