Grady Auvil, 93, a 75-year Orondo resident and owner of Auvil Fruit Company, passed away Monday morning, Dec. 28, 1998 at Central Washington Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born on Dec. 7, 1905 at Yeager, WV to Llewellyn and Ida (Ashworth) Auvil. At the age of two, he moved with his family to Entiat where he was raised and graduated from high school in 1922. He continued his education at Washington State University prior to moving to Orondo in 1928.

That same year he founded Auvil Fruit Company, at the age of 22. He was married to Lillie O. Grandt at the home of her parents on June 8, 1934 at Withrow. Together they made their home next to their business near Orondo.

Grady was considered a visionary in his field. He introduced many new fruits and innovations which proved beneficial to all growers. In 1941, he established the Red Haven Peach into the Northwest and in 1948, he introduced the use of grass cover in orchards. He demonstrated the advantages of using poplar trees for windbreaks in 1952. The following year, he was elected as President of the Washington State Horticulture Association. He was named "Grower of the Year" in 1954 and in 1960, he introduced the Red Gold Nectarine to the market. He developed the use of undertree sprinklers for frost control in 1967 and the following year he established the Tree Fruit Research Commission.

Grady introduced Granny Smith Apples to Washington State in 1972 and the following year pioneered the use of M26 rootstocks. In 1975, he first successfully marketed Rainier cherries and in 1976, he introduced double-row planting of Granny Smiths. In 1981, he was again named "Grower of the Year" as well as becoming the first recipient of the "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" award by the Apple Blossom Festival. In 1986, he was honored as "Cherry King" by the Washington State Cherry Commission. He received the Gamma Sigma Delta, Award of Merit in 1989 and in 1990, he was again named "Grower of the Year."

Grady was a 1998 recipient of the Washington State Legislature's "Washington State Medal of Merit", the state's highest award for achievements that have benefited others.

He was a 15-year member of the Orondo Public School Board and served on the Douglas County Schools Reorganizational Committee for 20 years. He served as a Douglas County P.U.D. Commissioner for six years and was a member and served on the Scholarship Committee of the W.S.U. Tree Fruit Research Commission. He was a member of the Orondo Grange for over 50 years.

His hobbies were his rose and vegetable gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie Auvil, at home; one daughter and son-in-law, Deanna and Bert Navone, East Wenatchee; two sons and daughters-in-law; Allen and Patti Auvil, Kirkland, and John and Pam Auvil, Orondo; one sister, Myrtle Mulvihill, CA; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Anna and Jim Wright, Orondo, Laura Navone, Renton, Jennifer and Mike Vannier, Kamloops, B.C. Canada, Grady T. and Heidi Auvil, Issaquah, Tammy and Steve Sully, Woodinville, Mike and Michelle Auvil, Wenatchee, Jessica Loyd, East Wenatchee, David Auvil, Wenatchee, and Rachel Hockett, Orondo; six great-grandchildren, Andrew Wright, Orondo, Casey Wright, Orondo, Melanie Kunde, Issaquah, Jacob Loyd, East Wenatchee, Hunter Vannier, Kamloops, B.C. Canada and Nathan Loyd, East Wenatchee. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and David Auvil and one sister, Mabel Abbott.

Commemoration services will be held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Wenatchee Free Methodist Church, 1601-5th Street, with the Rev. John Rogers officiating. The services will conclude at the church with a family graveside inurnment service to be held in the Orondo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name are suggested to the Orondo Fire Department, Merceda LeMaster Scholarship Fund, the Boy Scouts of America, Grand Columbia Council or the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
