Horace T. Godfrey, 77, Murray dairy farmer and civic leader, died of natural causes Tuesday at his home.
Mr. Godfrey was a member of the Jordan School District Board of Education for 10 years and was president of the Salt Lake County Water Conservancy District. He was at one time chairman of the Salt Lake County Sanitary Board and president of the Big Cottonwood-Tanner Ditch Co. For six years he was a director of the National Reclamation Assn., and had served as a state fair board member.
He was a director of the Little Cottonwood Water Co. and manager of the Green Ditch Co. at the time of his death.
A native of South Cottonwood, he was born Nov. 1, 1883 to James and Fanny Jones Godfrey. He married Lucy Bringhurst Feb. 20, 1907, in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Active in the LDS church, Mr. Godfrey was bishop of the Union Ward for 16 years, and was high councilman on the old Jordan Stake for five years. He had served a LDS mission to England.
Survivors include his widow and three sons and four dauaghters, Arthur J. Godfrey, San Luis Obispo, Calif; Willard H. Godfrey, Denver; Seymour J. Godfrey, Murray; Mrs. Ella Mathews, Salt Lake City; Mrs. LaTrue Rosenberger, Santa Monica, Calif., and Mrs. Alice Nance and Mrs. Lucy Freemen, both of Murray.
Also surviving are a brother, Sidney R. Godfrey, Murray, and three sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Maynes and Mrs. Zina Austin, both of Murray and Mrs. Bertha Lindberg, Pasadena, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at noon at the Union Fourth LDS Ward Chapel, 7400-10th East. Friends may call Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. at 4760 S. State and Saturday prior to services at LDS Ward Chapel. Burial will be at the Elysian Burial Gardens.
