The son of Samuel & Mary (White) Gardner and grandson of Thomas Gardner, Abel (also spelled Abell) married (1) Sarah Porter and (2) Sarah King in 1731.
The family legend is that he is buried in the family burying place on Gardner's Hill at Strong Water Brook (in Peabody). Later, the double headstone of Abel & Sarah Gardner was removed to Harmony Grove Cemetery.

He lived on the old family homestead in what is now Peabody. In the records, he was called husbandman, yeoman and tanner. He was a fence-viewer, surveyor, constable, selectman, a Trustee to Value persons of Estate, served as a juryman for many years, contributed to the South Parish Meeting House, and contributed money and a house to the school.

He inherited a lot and orchard in the "North Field" (at Central Street in Peabody), which he left to his son, Joseph in his will. He left the upland and meadow at Strong Water Brook including the Burying Place to Jonathan & Joseph. Another 120 acre farm left to him by his father, he willed one-half to his son Thomas and the other half to Abel. Having inherited one-eighth of the grist mill property on the Sout River, Abel sold one-half to his son, Jonathan, and gave the other half to Abel. His will dated Jan. 12, 1737, left his wife one-third of all his estate including real estate. His total property was worth 1993 pounds and 17 shillings.
