Member of British Parliament. Charles Arthur Russell received recognition as an 19th century barrister, who was known for his outstanding arbitration techniques. A supporter of Irish Home Rule, he was a defender of Charles Stewart Parnell. He studied at Castleknock College in Dublin, before qualifying as a solicitor in 1854. He practiced in the county courts of Down and Antrim and defended the Catholics in their resistance of Protestant proselytizing. In 1859 he became a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in London, becoming a Queen's Council in 1872. He was elected as Liberal Member of Parliament for Dundalk and supported the Irish Nationalists and Catholics, which earned him praise from Parnell. He was an elected Member of Parliament for Hackney South in 1885 and was knighted and made attorney-general by Prime Minister William Gladstone in 1886. He campaigned for Irish Home Rule in Parliament and was the leading advocate for Parnell in the Parnell Commission trial of 1888, where he exposed journalist Richard Piggott's forgeries. In 1893 he was British representative in the Bering Sea Arbitration, and in 1894 he was made Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and given a life peerage with the title Baron Russell of Killowen. Also in 1894, he became the first Catholic since the reformation to be appointed Lord Chief Justice of England. He traveled to the United States in 1896 to address the American Bar Association on the subject of arbitration, and in 1899 represented England on the Venezuelan Boundaries Commission. He then returned to his legal practice in London and died in the following year.
