Jerry L. Rollins, 71 of Hope, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 3, 1937, in Newberry, the son of Earl and Simonetta Hurt Rollins. He graduated from Odon High School. He retired as a diesel mechanic for Cummins Engine Co. He was member of the Masonic Lodge and served with the U.S. Navy- USM from 1958 until 1964. He was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Essex Rollins, whom he married March 3, 1972; four sons, Jeff Rollins and Greg Rollins, both of Lafayette, Ben Rollins of Lexington, Ky., and Rick Rollins of Columbus; four step daughters, Stephanie Bowers of New Jersey, Teresa Hadley of New York, and Bobbi Dailey and Brenda Humbel, both of Hope; one brother, Roger Rollins of Greensburg; one sister, Pat Clark of Azaela; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one stepson, Craig Phares.

The funeral was at Norman Funeral Home in Hope. Cremation was chosen. A graveside service and burial with military honors was in Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery.
