He was born July 26, 1920, in Tippecanoe County, and moved to Frankfort in 1983, coming from Frankton. In 1942, he earned his bachelor's degree from Purdue University and in 1962, earned his master's degree from Ball State University.
For 36 years he taught agriculture, biology, and chemistry at Frankton High School. He retired as principal there in 1982, previously serving as dean of boys and assistant principal.
On November 14, 1942, he married Beulah McFarland and she survives.
As a major in the Army during WW II, Mr. Kerkhoff earned five campaign stars. For 24 years, he served in the Army Reserves, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Frankfort Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Reserve Officers Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Clinton County Retired Teachers Association, a life member of American Legion and a charter member of Frankton Lions Club. He was also a 4-H leader in Frankfort for 27 years.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Wayne G. Kerkhoff of Charlotte, N.C.; Randall M. Kerkhoff of Lynn and Keith C. Kerkhoff of Lynn; and Keith C. Kerkhoff of Las Vegas; a daughter, Joyce M. Rodriguez of Miami; and a sister Anna Louise Larson of rural Lafayette.
