Attended and graduated from Centre College, Danville, KY class of 1856. Prewar schoolteacher in Vermillion, LA; Grand Gulf, TX; and Batesville, AR. Made 2nd LT Co. G, 7th AR, June 16, 1861, ist LT, July 26, 1861, AAAG of regt. Col. May 14, 1862. On recruiting service Jan-Feb 1863, WIA(wrist) Chickamauga. Died Oct. 25, 1863 in a hospital in Forsyth, GA of disease and wounds. Buried Forsyth City Cemetery. An obituary claims "as a man all loved him".

Survived by his widow Allie(maiden name was Mott but no date or location where they were married except they were married 3 years at his death but only together for 11 months.

She re-married 5-9-1865 as Alice Gillespie to James Knott in Forsyth, GA. There are other letters to his parents referencing to send replies to Mrs. Knott in Macon, GA.

Son of James English Gillespie 1792-1871 & Mary Adams Gillespie 1812-1880 of Danville and then Washington county, KY.
They married Sept. 30, 1834 in Mercer County, KY
