Henry was born in Ebersdorf, Prussia, son of Johann Spulak and Johanna Hoffmann. Family legend reports that he worked his way over from Germany to avoid being conscripted in the army. His naturalization papers indicate that he arrived in June 1888 on the ship, Lahn.

He married Minna Hagenau on Jan 5, 1892 in Maine and together they had 10 children, 9 who lived to adulthood. For most of his life, he owned a farm in Lisbon Falls, Maine. After their children were grown, they sold the farm and Minnie went to live with her daughters and Henry traveled out west.
