Elizabeth Pickard Karsten
in her biography in this volume, calls "Benjamin Thomas Allen the founder of the Tifton (GA) Gazette newspaper. She says he was one of five children of James Allen and Martha G. Whitaker Allen, both of whom died in Valdosta. His brothers were Sam, Walter, and George and sister, Mary Elizabeth.

Admitted to the bar when young, Allen wrote for the Valdosta Times and the Savannah Morning News as well as newspapers in Madison, Crescent City and St. Augustine in Florida.

He married Susan De Laughter,
( daughter of Captain and Mrs. Amon De. Laughter of Madison, FL on Dec. 29, 1886 ) .

In 1888, B. T Allen became owner and editor of the "Berrien County Pioneer" at Sparks, GA but was also a charter member of Tifton's Baptist Church.
In October of 1891, he moved his family to Tifton and established the Tifton Gazette, which he owned and edited until 1895, when he sold it.
His last issue was Friday, May 10, 1895.
While in Tifton, he served on the city council, the committee to name the streets and various other committees. After selling the Gazette, he operated a printing establishment in Tifton until 1897 when he moved to Pearson, GA to practice law.
In 1915 he resumed his writing and bought the "Pearson Tribune". He owned and edited it until 3 years prior to his death on July 2, 1932 at the age of 80.

Mrs. Allen had died soon after they left Tifton. He was widely known and respected for his 50 years of newspaper work in Georgia and Florida.
His nickname was "Bee Tree" since his initials were "B. T." and he always walked with his head thrown back as though looking for a bee tree!
He and Mrs. Allen had one daughter, Eugenia De Laughter Allen, who was a music teacher and society editress of the Pearson Tribune.
