Parents: Peter and Elizabeth Long of Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County, MI.

Married Alma A. Franklin in December, 1863.

Charles Dean Long worked on his family farm until he was thirteen years old. He then went to Flint, MI to get a more advanced education than was offered in the local district school. During these years he did chores to pay his board and took care of the school building to earn tuition. After graduation he began teaching school in Flint Township to earn money for college.

The Civil War delayed his higher education plans. On August 3, 1861, he enlisted in Flint, MI as a Private in the U.S. Army. On September 23, 1861 he joined Company A of the 8th Michigan Infantry Regiment. On April 16, 1862, he was severely wounded and had his left arm amputated at Wilmington Island, GA. Charles Dean Long was released from the U.S. Army on June 23, 1862 at James Island, SC.

He returned home and began studying law with Oscar Adams. Charles Dean Long served as County Clerk of Genesee County from 1865 to 1873 and while serving was admitted to the bar. He served as Prosecuting Attorney from 1875 until 1881, as a Supervisor of the National Census for Michigan in 1880, as Judge Advocate and Major on Governor Jerome's staff from 1881 until 1883, as a member of the state Military Board and Colonel on Governor Alger's staff from 1883 until 1885, as commissioner for Michigan to the Centennial Celebration of the Adoption of the U.S. Constitution held in Philadelphia in 1887, and as a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1888 until his death in 1902.
