Dorothy Viletta Pettit Brashear was born October 20, 1913 in Los Angeles, California, and died in Orem, Utah on March 14, 2009.

She was the only child of Theodore Henry Pettit, architect (1884-1965), and Violet Albertson Dayton Pettit, schoolteacher (1886-1976), both of Long Island, New York.

The couple moved to California for their honeymoon in 1910. Dorothy lived her first 95 years in California.

She graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles in 1931, where she became a designer and creator of jewelry. She was active in Job's Daughters and was elected Queen for one year. She also became an accomplished pianist.

She studied theater at the Wallis School of Dramatic Art, where as a child actress she starred in plays by Shakespeare including the role of Portia in the "Merchant of Venice," Puck in "Midsummer Night's Dream," Desdemona in "Othello," and Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet."

It was at the drama school that she met her future husband, Alton Harold Blackwell Brashear, printer and lithographer (1904-1956), who played piano in movie theaters and had bit parts in silent movies such as "Ben Hur." After graduation, Dorothy worked as a secretary in the office of the Los Angeles City Council.

Dorothy and Al were married on October 23, 1937, and to their union were born two children, Wayne Lloyd Brashear, music professor and landscape business owner, and Carol Yvonne Brashear Williams, coloratura soprano and advanced master gardener.

A widow for 52 years, Dorothy supported her children as a library clerk in the Los Angeles School District.

She was active in PTA, in Girl Scouts, and in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When she retired, she volunteered at the public library for many years, and enjoyed traveling about the country and to many parts the world.

She is survived by her two children, 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

The Funeral will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Orem Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East, Orem, Utah.
