JOHN J SCHMITZ
John J. Schmitz, 75, of 1634 Walnut Avenue, Wilmette, died last week in St. Ann's Home, Techny.
He was born in Chicago and moved to Wilmette when he was 3 years old. He was a member of the first freshman class at New Trier High School.
Surviving are three daughters, Sister M. Charlotte of the Order of Sisters of Christian Charity, a teacher at St. Gregory High School, Chicago, Mrs. James (Margaret) Zeutschel of 1838 Waukegan Road, Glenview, and Mrs. James (Charlotte) Lyle of Port Lyautey, Morocco, a son George E. of the Walnut Avenue address; two brothers, Peter Schmitz of Skokie, and Joseph Schmitz of 1936 Schiller Avenue, Wilmette; and several grandchildren.
Solemn requiem high mass was offered Saturday in St. Joseph Church. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

John began his career as a mail carrier at the Wilmette Post Office on October 15, 1906. He worked for the Post Office for 35 years. He walked an average of 15 miles a day, covered more than 250,000 miles during his career and much of this was in the cold and snow. He retired on September 1, 1941.

A one page handwritten biography of John's life was written by him. I found this paper in Tom Lyle's things in September, 2023, after Tom died in April, 2020. •
John Schmitz was born Jan 18, 1887, in Chicago, Illinois and baptized in St. Michael's Church. He moved to 1920 Schiller Ave, Wilmette, Illinois, at the age of 3 years with his parents. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School at the age of 5 1/2 yrs and graduated at the age of 13 yrs. He then attended New Trier High School for 6 months. (He was a member of the first freshman class at New Trier High School.) After this he obtained a position with Marshall Field Co. wholesale. Then Adams and Wells in Chicago, Ill where he worked for 1 1/2 yrs immediately he began work for the C N W Ry Co where he was employed for 3 1/2 yrs. On Oct 15th, 1906 he started as Letter Carrier in Wilmette, Ill and retired Sept 1st, 1941.

He was married June 28th, 1916 to Frieda Eberhardt. The Nuptial Mass being read at St. Joseph's Church by the deceased Pastor Rev. Wm Netstrastor. With this marriage their were born five children Frances, Margaret, Arthur John, George and Charlotte.

He retired Sept 1st, 1941 on disability and moved to Stevens Point, Wis. (John bought a house on July 17th, 1941, at 1228 College Ave, Stevens Point and sold it on May 15, 1944) After residing there three years moved back to 1634 Walnut Ave, Wilmette, Ill on June 1, 1944.
