Other than three years as a student at Ole Miss and two or more years at Medical School in Nashville, he spent his life on this farm where he was born and died. He spent part of several years in Jackson MS when he was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives November 7, 1911. Dr. Crawford was born in the dog trot house that his father John built on the new land. Dr. Crawford returned after graduating from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1877 and purchased this house and surrounding farm land from his father, John. From this house, he practiced medicine. All of his children as well as several grandchildren were born there.
Of interest: "Catalogue of Members of The Fraternity of Delta Psi" (at Ole Miss)compiled in 1889, lists for the 1872 Year:
James Wilson Crawford Physician
William Van Amberg Sullivan Lawyer
Not only were these first cousins at Ole Miss at the same time, but were members of the same fraternity. Both went on to Vanderbilt to receive Medical and Law degrees respectively. William Sullivan was eventually elected as a U.S Representative from north MS, and was appointed a U.S. Senator from 1898 to 1901, upon the death of one of the MS Senators.
Dr. Crawford's Obit: From Commercial Appeal dated April 14, 1939

He served for a time as a member of the Mississippi Legislature and was a leader in religious and civic affairs. He was a deacon of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

There has been conflicting information over his middle name being Wilson or William. However, documentation while he was a student at Ole Miss and his death certificate indicate Wilson.

His tombstone lists a death date of 1938. However, his Death Certificate #7653 lists a death date of 13 April 1939. Page 47 of "Crawfords of Tate - Desoto County" by Bob Crawford contains copies of the Death Certificate along with copies of notices of his death in April 1939, from both Memphis and Jackson, MS newspapers.
