On April 8, 2002, I contacted the National Archives requesting military service and pension records for David P Walthall.

His records contained the following deposition:

"About the 15th day of May 1864, near Little Rock Arkansas he was attacked with an epileptic fit, the first that he had ever had in his life, which said epileptic fit rendered him wholly disabled to do duty for the period of two days; that about one week thereafter he had another attack and fit of the same kind; afterwards the same kind of attacks came upon him about every two or three days, continuing so for the period of six months, the fits lasting for about two hours each time he was attacked. Since that time he has continued to be attacked as aforesaid every week or more frequently if he closely followed his business – farming."
