OBITUARY: Nichols, Washington (from Bentonville Sun) Died at his home in south Bentonville Jan 1st, 1910, Washington Nichols at the age of 57 years - The remains were taken to the family burying ground near Hiwassee and interred Sunday afternoon. Deceased had lived in Bentonville about three months. A widow and several children are left to mourn their loss. (The Springdale News, 1-14-1910) Obituary was printed in the book "Obituaries of Washington County", V4 1909-1912, Compiled by Barbara Easley, published by Heritage Books, 1998.

About 1990, descendants of George W. Nichols donated funds to buy this stone and replace the wooden cross and field stone that had previously marked his grave. The grandchildren disagreed on what his middle name was: some remembered it was George Washington Nichols, and some felt it was George William Nichols. All agreed that he was called "Wash". Census records referred to him as 'Wash' and his obituary showed name as Washington Nichols. His parents were George Washington Nichols, Sr., and Martha Oakes Nichols. He was married to Amelia Jane Carr Nichols. George W. Nichols and Mary Jane Nichols were twins. U.S. Census records show them born in Arkansas, however family memories say they were born in Tennessee and came by wagon train with their family to Benton County Arkansas in 1854.
