Army Sgt. Weinger was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Woodstock, Illinois. He died in Jalabad, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in Kot, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Bob was a 2003 graduate of Round Lake Beach High School in Round Lake Beach, Illinois. He loved sports and played on the soccer and wrestling teams in school. On January 12, 2006, he enlisted in the Army. He volunteered for his second tour of duty and deployed to Afghanistan on August 21, 2008 after serving in Iraq from September 2006 through October 2007. While in Afghanistan, he was assigned to the Nangarhar Provincial Reconstruction Team Security Platoon. His awards and decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze Service Star, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ "M" device, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal. Bob was an incredible man who had a silly side to keep up morale of his friends both here and in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he had a tender side for his friends and family – willing to do anything for someone in need. Bob was an avid White Sox and Bears fan, loved to hunt with his father, loved life, friends and family, and was a devoted soldier. True friend, loyal family member, incredible soldier, true American hero – these are some of the terms used to describe Bob. Bob had this to say on his personal web page: "Thanks to everyone who supports us and to those who don't well just remember we sacrifice our lives and everything that means something to us…..HOOAH!!!!!"
