Jeremiah Thomas French Lewis is the surviving twin of Daniel Lewis and Nancy French Lewis. He is the first of his family to move to Hamilton Co., IL. Jeremiah fought in the Black Hawk Indian War. He fought with the 1st Regt. 1st Brigade, Illinois Mounted Volunteers. Jeremiah married Phoebe Vickers 23 Nov 1826 and they had sixteen children together. Jeremiah was a preacher and elder at the Primitive Baptist Church and traveled throughout southern Illinois preaching. He helped organize the Union Church between Raleigh & Galatia and was the preacher there about 1837. Jeremiah volunteered for the Mexican War in 1847 and sailed from Alton, IL to Tompico and fought overland to Mexico City. He was sick with malaria and jungle fever but served in all the battles that took place. Jeremiah, his wife, Phoebe and small daughter Dulcena died from Cholera after drinking from a contaminated spring when returning from a church outing. All three died the same day. They left behind seven minor children that went to live with their brother, Moury Vickers Lewis.
