Was a wholesale coal dealer for 60 years, starting with his employment as secretary and treasurer of the Short Mountain Coal Co.

In 1894 he was an organizer of Guardian Security, Trust & Deposit Co and was elected its President.

In 1896 he became Treasurer of newly formed Baltimore Glass Mfg Co.

In 1898 he became Treasurer of The Co-operative Savings & Loan Association.

Member of the Board of Swarthmore College from 1884 - 1904.

He was involved with The House of Reformation for Colored Boys in Cheltenham, Prince Georges, MD. I don't have all the dates; he was Treasurer at least in 1910 and Secretary at least 1889.

Father of Emily Butler (Miller), Louise, Helen, Edward Alford, & Raymond Pleasants.
