James Bennett was born in Virginia, one of seven known children born to William & Mary (Green) Bennett, brother of Joseph (Elizabeth); William (Mary); Catherine (Robert) Houston; Mollie Jane (Michael) Shuffett; Elizabeth (Thomas) Shuffett and Frances (Jacob) Renaker. He was never married.

He served six months in the War of 1812 from March 3 until September 3, 1813. He held the rank of 3rd Sergeant in Captain John D. Thomas's company of Infantry of the Kentucky Militia, detached, commanded by Lt-Col Wm E Boswell of Harrison County, Ky.
