Mr. GEORGE GENE SEALS, 85, of Bartlesville, died at 1:27 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the Bailey Medical Center in Owasso.
Funeral services for Mr. Seals will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum, with Mr. Robert Hamm officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the James H. Teel American Legion Post #105, and funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
Immediately following the cemetery service, a reception and Celebration of the Life of George G. Seals will be held at the Family Life Center of the Adams Blvd Church of Christ at 3700 S.E. Adams Blvd.
Mr. Seals was born at Broken Arrow, Okla., on Sept. 28, 1923, the son of Joshua J. and Cora E. Hudson Seals. He grew up and attended schools at Broken Arrow and graduated from Broken Arrow High School.
He entered the United States Navy in 1942 and served during World War II in the South Pacific and was involved in the Battle of Okinawa.
Following his Honorable Discharge in 1946, he returned to Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma A & M at Stillwater from 1946 until 1950, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, and was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity from 1948 to 1950. Through the years, he continued his education and received his Masters Degree in Rural Adult Education from Oklahoma State University in 1960.
Mr. Seals was married to Vernell Curry on June 18, 1950, at the family home in Hollis, Okla. They made their home in a number of locations during his years of service as a County Extension Director. He had 34 years of active service with Oklahoma State University Extension Service, including Marshall County for two years, Stephens County for seven years, Murray County for 19 years and, after moving to Bartlesville in 1978, served in Washington County for six years until his retirement in 1984. He was then active in crop appraisal for 20 years, and also taught at Tri-County Tech.
He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, with 52 years of perfect attendance, and had been a member of clubs in Duncan, and in Sulphur, where he served as club president, and in Bartlesville as a Kiwanis member. He was also a member of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, with whom he served as a board member, committee chairman and was the Southern Director, and had also served as the President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Oklahoma County Agents Association. As the 4-H National Director, he participated in the motorcade with President Dwight Eisenhower when the 4-H Center was opened at Chevy Chase, Md., in 1961. In Washington County, he was very active with the Washington County Livestock program and was instrumental in starting the Junior Livestock Sale.
Survivors include his wife, Vernell Seals of the home in Bartlesville; three sons, Marcus Gene Seals of Decatur, Texas, Lanny Maurice Seals and his wife Brenda of Bartlesville, and Patrick Curry Seals and his wife Jean Ann of Sugar Land, Texas; one brother, Hoyet Seals of Oakdale, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Tucker Hudson Seals and Margo Alexandra Seals, both of Sugar Land.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Seals, and three sisters, Gladys Mason, Pauline Summers, and Nora Hopman.
