James Melvin "Mel" Younkin, age 77, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999 at his home in Wenatchee with his loving wife at his side.
Mel was born on July 4, 1921 to Alfred Arthur and Lillian (Rhoads) Younkin here in Wenatchee. He received his education in Wenatchee, and after school he entered the U.S Navy, and faithfully served his country in W.W. II. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Wenatchee and worked in the fruit industry. He owned and operated Younkin Fruit Warehouse from 1946 to 1987. Mel was a member of the American Legion, and was a past Grand Chef of du Washington 40 & 8. He was a past commander of Post 10, and a member of the VFW and was the Ninth District Commander. At the American Legion, Mel ran the Bingo for 16 years, and also one of his most enjoyable activities was serving as the Oratoracle Chairman for 20 years.
Mel loved life and loved spending time with his wife Sandy.
They married on May 15, 1971 in Wenatchee. They have enjoyed 27 years together. They were one in heart and purpose, and they shared everything together. Mel especially enjoyed woodworking, scouting with the Boy Scouts of America, traveling, fishing, and just loved to spend time with Sandy.
He is survived by his loving wife Sandy of the home; daughter, Diane Egan of Salem, OR; three sons, Jim Younkin, and Dave Younkin both of Wenatchee, Mark Younkin of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Lee Younkin of Dansville, CA; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nephews and one niece. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond.
