As a young man, Jack played in several country bands. He sang and played several instruments.
Jack went to work at Alcoa and trained as an electrician. He eventually owned and a operated an electrical business and also raised cattle. He was both an Oddfellow and a Mason. He was a member of Owensville Baptist Church.
He married Martha Ann Shell on August 17, 1951, in Malvern, Arkansas. They had three sons before divorcing in 1983.
His birth year is listed in some official records as 1933, but Jack often said that it was wrong. Apparently his mother didn't remember it correctly when filling out some form. The 1940 census shows him as being 8 years old, so apparently his birth year was 1932. His draft registration also has 1932 as the year of his birth.
