Enlisted as a private in the Cold Water Rebels (later designated Company E, 34th Mississippi Infantry), at Mt. Pleasant in Marshall County, Mississippi, 10 Mar 1862. When the company was mustered into Confederate service on 14 Apr 1862, he is shown as a farmer, age 36, 5'11-1/2" tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. At some point thereafter, he evidently served for a short time as the company 1st sergeant, as the muster roll for 10 Mar to 31 Aug 1862 notes "Pay due as 1st Sergt. to June 5, 1862." The following year he was noted as "Absent - Sent Hospital April 20, 1863. Order Brigade Surgeon." On 29 Apr 1863, he died at Academy Hospital, Chattanooga, Tennessee, of gastritis. He had $40.25 at the time of his death, which was turned over to the surgeon in charge of the hospital who turned the funds over to the Council of Administration.

Of interest is this family found on the 1860 census of Marshall County, Mississippi:
