American Patriot and businessman. He emigrated from the Sowerby community of Yorkshire, England to Charleston, South Carolina with his brothers Eli and William in the mid 1700s. In 1758 he settled in what is now Camden and founded a store, "Joseph Kershaw & Company." He was a Colonel during the Revolution and mortgaged most of his property and business interests to purchase supplies for the Continental Army. He had difficulty obtaining reimbursement after the war and spent the rest of his life attempting to satisfy his creditors. There is a cenotaph in Kershaw's memory at Camden's Revolutionary War Cemetery, Memorial 42539871. Eli Kershaw (42500713) was his brother
