"Grand Old Man - Abraham R. Beck will celebrate his 88th birthday anniversary tomorrow, Friday. Mr. Beck is seen on the street daily enjoying long walks and seldom fails to attend church service. As an educator he became known in a wide circle, having conducted what was known as Beck's Family School of thirty years. The school was discontinued twenty-six years ago, but the name and the influence of the school lives on.
Mr. Beck possesses a clear mind, continuing to keep the Moravian church archives and is an authority on the history of Lititz. Mr. Beck is remarkably versatile. He is a botanist, an ornithologist, writer, musician and artist."

"Abraham R. Beck, Veteran Educator Died Yesterday, in 95th Year.

Abraham R. Beck, aged 94 years, 9 months and 3 days, passed away on Wednesday, after an illness of some In months resulting from kidney trouble, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. C. Miller, on South Broad Street. Abraham Reinke Beck was born at Lititz December 16, 1833. His parents were John and Johanna (Reinke) Beck. He was educated at his father's school, a private institution of considerable size and influence from 1819 to 1865. He was a teacher at Nazareth Hall from 1855-57. In the summer of the latter year he entered his father's school as teacher, and in the same year began his musical service in the Lititz Moravian church— keen knowledge of boys and whose versatile talents contributed much to the education as well as the entertainment of his family group of pupils; for besides common routine studies he taught them music, drawing and painting, and natural history, rifle shooting, etc., and he will always be happily remembered by his old boys as a master narrator of original stories. Upon retirement from school work-in 1895, Mr. Beck became archivist of the Lititz Moravian Church in which position he translated and compiled numerous historical works of lasting value, notably his Moravian Grave-yards of Lititz. Large Crowd Heard Concert Fully two thousand people heard the sacred concert on Sunday after-noon in the Park given by the combined Male Choruses of York, Bphrata and Lititz. The program was opened with a prayer by Rev. Crosland, president of the local Ministerial Association. Two numbers were then given by the Lititz Chorus, followed by the Ephrata and York Choruses, singing two selections. The combined Choruses then sang about seven numbers which were greatly appreciated by the large audience. The program was closed with the singing of "Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow," Mr. Harry Bailey, through whose efforts the concert was given, had charge of the program. Mr. H. U. Hershey, of York, conducted the mass Chorus very ably. The collection taken on Sunday amounted to $127.18, which was di-vided equally between the three Choruses. Mr. Bailey plans to form a male Chorus of about 2500 to 8000 voices, composed of organizations from Lancaster, York, Berks, Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. He states that in New York the Associated Glee Clubs is a very successful organization and he is very enthusiastic about organizing such a chorus in this section. singing tenor parts and playing the organ, slide trombone, violin and violin cello for 55 years, to July 1912. In 1860 he married Joanna Salome Huebener, a daughter of the Rev. Samuel and Salome (Tschudy) HueIbener. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1910. She died in 1917. In 1865 he established the Beck Family School for Boys. This was successfully conducted at Audubon Villa, Lititz, for 30 years and had as patrons prominent people of their day. Mr. Beck was a born teacher whose As a musical composer Mr. Beck is best known for his male quartet to the words "Just As I Am," regularly used on Palm Sunday in many Moravian churches. Of five children three survive. They are Mrs. H. C. Miller, of Lititz; Prof. Paul E. Beck, of the Moravian College, Bethlehem; and Prof. Herbert H, Beck, of Franklin and Marshall College. There are 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at his late residence, 127 S. Broad Street, at 2 P. M. on Saturday, Sept, 22."
