Clement Briggs married (1) By 1 March 1630/1 Joan Allen (1 March 1630/1: "Mr. Tho: Stoughton, constable of Dorchester, is fined £5 for taking upon him to marry Clement Briggs & Joane Allen ...." She died by 1640. (On 6 March 1637/8 at a Quarter Court at Cambridge Clement Briggs gave a bond of £10 for the appearance of his wife at the next court; at the same court Arthur Warren was presented "for keeping company with Clement Briggs's wife, [which] was found to be true." At a Quarter Court on 5 June 1638 Clement Brigg's wife was "enjoined not to come into the company of Arthur Warren.")

They had two children: Thomas & Jonathan.

Note: William Briggs is most probably not the son of Clement and Joan Briggs. His birth year is 14 years before his supposed parent's marriage.

NOTE: In a document found on Ancestry, titled "80 Immigrants: Our Merrill-Covell Pedigree", it is noted on page 8 of this book (slide 17 of the image), after quoting the above legal charge regarding Arthur Warren and Joan, which has been widely circulated over the years, that "We are assured by a later biographer, however, that 'there is no evidence that this was in any way a moral charge against Joan Briggs.'" Given that important piece of information, I thought important to note that since we cannot know the whole story from so many years ago, we should probably clarify that in the memory of our mutual grandmother."
