While in her early teens she met and fell in love with Newton Levi, a local boy some ten years older. In as much as he had few prospects, George and Sarah adamantly refused to give their consent for marriage. Newton left to seek his fortune elsewhere and even the letters he wrote to Eva were kept from her by Sarah. With Newton out of the way, Eva was talked into marrying a neighbor, James Henthorn, again much older. It was expected that he would inherit the family farm, thus proving to be a more suitable son-in-law. They were married on Eva's sixteenth birthday.

Eva and James soon began their family and over the course of thirteen years had three girls and three boys. Bright prospects did not materialize and the family remained quite poor. It was during this period that James suffered a stroke, while working as a section hand on the railroad, which, according to son Don, resulted in the onset of epilepsy.

It is uncertain when Newton Levi returned to Ripley County, however the attraction for Eva was still there. Apparently he had some success in improving his station in life. The problems in the family first became public in September 1901 when Eva filed for divorce in Rush County.

Eva's marriage to her first love did not last long. Newton contracted Lymphatic TB and was ill about a year before his death in late August 1907. The immediate cause for Henry Newton Levi's death was an intestinal hemorrhage and he was buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.

On July 11, 1909, Eva married William Frederick Cupp in Rushville.
