ESTHER C. MCINNES

Mrs. Ray W. McInnes, 99, a resident of Emporia Presbyterian Manor, 2300 Industrial Road, died August 4, 1996, at the Manor Health Care Center in Emporia, Kansas.

Mrs. McInnes and her husband Ray owned and operated the Allen Lumber and Supply Company at Allen, Kansas, before they retired in 1962. Esther and Ray later moved to Council Grove, Kansas, and then she moved to Emporia, Kansas, after the death of her husband.

Esther Clara Shellenberger, the daughter of George and Emma Yahn Shellenberger, was born April 7, 1897, at Americus, Kansas. She married Ray W. McInnes on June 20, 1923, at her parents' home in Allen, Kansas. He died earlier.

Mrs. McInnes was a member of the United Methodist Church at Allen, Kansas. She was a Past Matron and a member for more than 70 years of LuLu Chapter 135, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Royal Neighbors of America both at Allen, Kansas.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Flora Rose Shellenberger and Isla Shellenberger, both of Emporia, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. The Reverend Ellen Peach of the United Methodist Church at Allen, Kansas, will conduct the service. Burial, with services conducted by LuLu Chapter 135 OES, will be in Allen Cemetery at Allen, Kansas.

Memorial contributions to the Hospice of the Flint Hills may be sent to the funeral home.

She attended Kansas State Normal School (Emporia) to become certified as a teacher as a young lady. She was fond of telling stories about when she taught l-8 rural school in her home community and her youngest brother,Virgil Roosevelt Shellenberger, Sr., (my father) was one of her students.

My Aunt Esther was involved in many things. She loved to make quilts and won many purple ribbons and grand prizes for her quilts at fairs, in Allen, Kansas, Emporia, Kansas, and Topeka, Kansas. She also created many pieces of beautiful embroidery work.
