On 13 March 1881 when James Matthew "Matt" was 22, he first married Mary Jane KENNEDY, daughter of Aaron W. KENNEDY & Keziah COCKERHAM, in Surry County, North Carolina. Born ca 1862 in Surry County, North Carolina. Mary Jane died in Surry County, North Carolina bef 1884, she was 22.

On 21 February 1884 when James Matthew "Matt" was 25, he second married Carrie Mae Payne KEY, daughter of Samuel Chaney KEY & Nancy WHITE, in Surry County, North Carolina. Born on 1 April 1866 in Surry County, North Carolina. Carrie Mae Payne died in Yadkin County, North Carolina on 21 October 1933, she was 67. Buried on 24 October 1933 in Union Cross Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Paternal grandparents were Thomas and Lucinda Marium Pace Stanley. Maternal grandparents were Albert White, Sr. and Margaret Moore.
