DAVID MILLER - COUNTY PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Died Last Evening at Home of Daughter, Mrs. Chappell - Was 84 Years old
David Miller for sixty years a resident of Amherst, and probably one of the oldest settlers in the county, died at the home of his daughger, Mr. I. F. Chapwell, 298 West 22nd street lst night. Mr. Miller made his home with his daughter for the past two years. He was 81 years ods and death was due to old age.
Mr. Miller was well known all over the county and had a large circle of friends in this city. He was a member of the Richard Allen Post. No. 65 Department of Ohio G. A. R.
Born in Bavaria, Germany, in August 1827, Mr. Miller came to America with his parents at an early age. He was married to Margaret Hildebrand at eh age of 21 years. Eight children were born of the union, seven of which are still living.
The children are: Mrs. T. E. Gawn, Mrs. Geo. Keller, Mrs. Fred James, and Mrs. Lula Miller of Amherst, Mrs. I. f. Chappell, Phil Clotz and Lew Miller of Lorain.
Mr. Miller enlisted in the army when President Lincoln called for volunteers. He was a member of Battery No. 1 regiment Ohio Volunteers light artillery. During the war he engaged in many of the important battles and won fame and distinction although never was promoted in an office. Several times he was confined in the army hopsitals but always recovered and was discharged in Jun 1865.
Funeral servies will take place at the home of Mrs. Chappell, Monday afternoon at 1 oc'clock. Rev. Harding of Amherst will officiate. Burial will take place in the Cleveland street cemetery in Amherst.

David Miller, a well-known resident of North Amherst, is an early settler of Lorain County. His parents, Jacob and Catherine (Cook) Miller, were natives of Bavaria, Germany, and in 1847 emigrated to America, locating in North Amherst, Lorain Co., Ohio. where they passed the rest of their lives. They reared a family of seven children: Jacob, who lives in Brownhelm township; Catherine, in Mercer county, Penn.; Elizabeth, wife of Jacob Miller, of Sheffield township; David; Julia, living in Michigan; Margaret, wife of Adam Baker, of Black River Township; and Amelia, wife of Barney Burke, of Lorain. The father of this family followed farming; he died in North Amherst in 1889, having been preceded by the mother in 1888, when aged eighty-eight years.
David Miller was born in 1827 in Bavaria, Germany, where he was reared and educated. He learned the blacksmith's trade, which he followed in Germany, England and France, and in 1847 came with his parents to North Amherst, Lorain county, where he also followed his trade for many years. In 1864 he enlisted at Wooster, Ohio, in Company I, First Ohio Artillery, for one year or during the war, serving as blacksmith; they were stationed at Chattanooga, Tenn., and at Dalton, Ga., at which latter place Mr. Miller received an honorable discharge in 1865, and returned to Lorain county.
In 1851 Mr. Miller was married in Lorain county, to Miss Margaret Hildebrand, a native of Germany, daughter of David and Gertrude (Reis) Hildebrand, natives of Hessen, Germany, whence they emigrated in 1835, settling in Black River township, Lorain Co., Ohio, where the father passed away in 1858, and was followed to the grave by the mother in 1862. They were the second German family to settle in Lorain county. A brother of Mrs. Miller resides in North Carolina. Our subject and wife are the parents of seven children: Lewis, a farmer of Sheffield township; Mary, wife of George Keller, a farmer of Black River township; Sophia, wife of Winnie Gawn, of Amherst township; Elizabeth, wife of Roy Leslie, of North Amherst; Rowena, wife of Philip Klotz, residing in Lorain, Julia; and Emma, wife of Irving Chappell, a machinist, of Cleveland, Ohio. In politics Mr. Miller is a Republican, and in religious faith he and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church, at North Amherst. Mr. Miller is now engaged in fruit farming and gardening.
