Lieutenant (Junior Grade) C. K. Bronson, USN, was designed Naval Aviator #15. Graduated U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1910. Died at the Naval Proving Grounds by a premature bomb explosion during flight.

Washington, D.C., Nov. 9 - Lieutenant C.K. Bronson, a Bushnell boy, was killed at Indian Head testing grounds yesterday by the premature explosion of an aeroplane bomb. Lieut. Luther Welsh, who was with Bronson in the monoplane also lost his life.

The men were literally blown to pieces in the air.

Ordnance officers witnessing the experiment saw a tremendous explosion as the bomb was launched and the aeroplane and its passengers were blown to atoms.

Welsh was born in Missouri and was appointed from that state. Bronson was born in Illinois and appointed from New York.

The officers were 1,000 feet up. Welsh launched one. It exploded immediately beneath the aeroplane. The aeroplane broke in two and fell into the Potomac River.
A searching party dragging the river late today found a portion of one seat of the aeroplane.

Lieutenant Bronson was born in Bushnell, Illinois, in 1888, graduating from Annapolis in 1912 [sic]. Lieutenant Welsh, born in Kansas City in 1889, was graduated from Annapolis in 1909, number four and a star in his class. For a time he was ordnance inspector at George Washington University. In 1915, he became staff aid of the commander of the third division, Atlantic Fleet.
