Enlisted 23 May 1862, Co. H, 50th Georgia Volunteer Regiment, C.S.A. "Colquitt Marksmen". Wounded in right shoulder and lung, resulting in paralysis and total disability at Knoxville, Tennessee, November 29, 1863. Appointed 3rd Corp. April 1864.

Joel S., was born in the year 1838; married to Miss Annie Dukes, daughter of Elder Matthew Dukes, in the year 1860. Was a soldier in the war between the states, participated in the battle at Knoxville, Tenn., where he received a severe wound and from which he has ever since been a constant sufferer. Was received into the fellowship of Sardis Church in the year 1866 and baptized by Elder H. Fuller; was. soon after chosen to the office of deacon, which position he continues to fill to the satisfaction of all his brethren. He was in the constitution of Pleasant Grove Church in January, 1884, and still has his membership at this church.
