His middle name was "Francis" ... Son of James F. Coll and Hannah M. Coll ... Killed In Action when the B-24 Liberator on which he was flying in crash in the Mediterranean Sea.

William Francis Coll was born 9 May 1917 in McAdoo, Pennsylvania. William died when his B24 was shot down over the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. A huge turning point in the war. The remains of the airplane were found after the war on the ground in Romania. The bodies of the air crew were retrieved from the crash site and interred together at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Lemay, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, on 3 Aug 1950.

The Scrappy II B24 Liberator did not crash in the Mediterranean Sea but was flying over Ploesti, Romania, oil refineries when anti-aircraft fire and exploding oil tanks severely damaged the plane. The pilot, Scrivener, crash landed the plane in a wheat field, skidding almost to a halt, when a 100-foot fireball erupted and killed all on board. The crew was buried in a makeshift grave until after the war when in 1950 they were returned to the USA and buried at Jefferson Barracks.
